Lexus is heading over to the Chicago Auto Show with an all-star lineup, including its LF-LC Blue concept and the recently debuted 2014 IS model.

Last year, the Japanese luxury automaker saw its sales jump 31 percent compared to 2011 and is looking forward to a strong 2013 thanks to its redesigned model lineup. Last year we saw new versions of the ES, LS, RX, and LX models and this year the all-new IS made its debut at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show .

Alongside its sedans and SUVs, Lexus will have its LFA Nurburgring Edition supercar present as well as the LF-LC Blue concept, which was also seen at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show . Joining those vehicles will be a modified Five Axis LS from SEMA, and the IS F CCS-R race car which competed at last year’s Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

New York city to create 10,000 car charging spaces

If Michael Bloomberg had his way, ew York city would have added 10,000 new public spaces to charge electric cars in New York City in seven years.

In an interview with the local journalist, he had the following to say. “This year we’ll pilot curbside vehicle chargers that will allow drivers to fill up their battery in as little as 30 minutes. We’ll work with the city council to amend the Building Code so that up to 20 percent of all new public parking spaces will be wired and ready for electric vehicles.” That is a big ask, equating to roughly 20% of all new spaces created within the city being allocated with car charging facilities.

New York City currently requires new parking spaces for any new building construction; a law that the mayor’s office says adds about 10,000 spaces each year. Bloomberg’s proposal would see 20 percent of those parking spaces reserved for electric cars.

If the plan takes effect, it will mark a massive jump in New York’s public charging stations — there are currently 100. There are also 120 for the city’s own electric fleet.

10,000 new spaces within 7 years will definitely see the emergence of more and more electrical vehicles.

Private companies began installing public charging stations in New York City in 2010. According to a New York state initiative last year, there were about 400 charging stations set to be live by April 2013. San Francisco city government offered free charging in about 20 public garages at one point. Houston has built, or plans to build about 50 charging stations.

According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles: as of December 2012, there are 2,069 electric vehicles registered in the five boroughs of New York CIty.

Hybrid car production expected to be ramped up in 2013

General Motors expects a huge increase in plug-in hybrid sales for 2013, and is ramping up production accordingly. 2013 looks like it could be the year of the big electrical car push. Roughly 30,000 Volts and Opel Amperas were sold in 2012.

With such stellar sales figures, car makers are looking to consolidate on those figures and it is rumoured GM plans to build 20 percent more in 2013. That may be within the brand’s grasp considering GM aims to build between 1,500 and 3,000 of the cars per month.

Last year, Chevrolet sold 23,461 Volts in the U.S., but sales were partially hampered by temporary production shutdowns last year. Last year, Prius sales were 10 times greater than the Volts. Of course, that includes the entire Prius family. It’s also not a fair comparison because the Volt is still an industry fledgling beside the entrenched Prius.

Golf-e to make its official debut at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show

Although the much talked about next generation Golf was only to make its official debut at the 2013 Geneva show, the seventh-generation incarnation of the Golf will be getting an electric car variant. The aptly named Golf-e broke cover ahead of its 2013 Geneva Motor Show debut.

To differentiate itself from a standard Golf, the Golf-e has reshaped grilles on the front end and features mildly different headlights and taillights. On the inside, the German automaker has replaced the traditional tachometer with a pair of smaller gauges with meters presenting relevant information for the EV.

The Golf-e is powered by an electric motor that’s good for 115 hp and 199 lb-ft of instant torque. A 26.5-kWh lithium ion battery is located under the rear seats and can be charged in 20 minutes using a quick charge system. A standard socket will charge the Golf-e in five hours and offers a driving range of 109 miles depending on the conditions.

When it comes to Italian heritage and beautiful design, the Alfa Romeo brand is synonymous with both. Alfa has just recently released an image of its Gloria Concept car, which will be heading to the 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

Alfa Romeo will also be debuting its production model, currently named the 4C.

According to the Italian automaker, the Gloria Concept was built in collaboration with the European Design Institute (IED) of Turin and Alfa Romeo Style Center. It will debut at the Geneva Motor Show, but the Gloria Concept is actually designed for the North American and Asian markets.

The Gloria’s overall size is similar to an Audi A5 Sportback, and the automaker also mentioned that it will be powered by a state-of-the-art V6 or V8 biturbo engine. Chances are, those engines are the same powerplants recently introduced in the new Maserati Quattroporte.
